Project for Enhancing Marine Biodiversity and Fostering Sustainable Ecology in the Tourism Industry

核心問題

  1. 1 Nestled in the Caribbean Sea, Belize stands out with the renowned Great Blue Hole, recognized as one of the world's top ten dive sites and a must-visit for divers. In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on crucial environmental issues such as carbon sequestration and biodiversity. Belize's marine areas boast suitable habitats for seagrass bed restoration, nurturing abundant biodiversity ecosystems and serving as a significant region for blue carbon generation. By merging scuba diving tourism with eco-friendly itineraries, there's an opportunity to reinvest tourism earnings into vital evaluations of the local ecology.
  2. 2 This approach aims to establish a baseline for local biodiversity and propose various action plans, including the restoration of seagrass beds or mangroves, to enhance carbon sequestration (blue carbon). Initiatives such as planning Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), implementing Biodiversity Credit programs, and other measures contribute to strengthening Belize's adaptive resilience to global climate change.

創新行動

  1. 1/ This project aims to establish a multilingual integrated tourism platform, facilitating collaboration between Taiwanese local travel industry professionals and Belize for the development of sustainable scuba diving travel itineraries. In addition to channeling tourism revenue into local marine research foundational studies, the project also integrates with a marine citizen scientist initiative to build the Belize Marine Biodiversity Database.
  2. 2/ Leveraging the power of divers, this initiative aims to accumulate local marine life data through their participation. Simultaneously, the team plans to conduct foundational training programs for local marine citizen scientists and quantitative survey personnel, including line transect surveys. This effort aims to cultivate local research capabilities. Based on the survey data, various marine conservation action plans will be developed. The project also involves collaboration with Taiwanese academic resources and cross-industry enterprises to address local marine ecological challenges.

量化預期成果

  1. 1 Enhancing visibility in the Chinese-language market
Facilitate the international exposure of Belize Sustainable Tourism Information in the global travel market, anticipating a cumulative reach exceeding 900,000 impressions.
  2. 2 Increase in tourism revenue sources
During the project timeline, aim to increase the number of targeted Taiwanese visitors to Belize by 30 individuals, thereby generating a value surpassing NTD$ 6,000,000.
  3. 3 Establishing a baseline for maritime data
Complete a comprehensive report on the marine biodiversity and climate change resilience in the specific areas of Belize.

團隊介紹

BlueTrend Team aims to address the lack of foundational data in Taiwan's nearshore marine environments by connecting divers and researchers through a platform approach. The initiative seeks to integrate innovative technologies such as big data, AI, and blockchain, fostering collaboration among the public, businesses, and government to construct an ecosystem for ocean citizen data. In 2021, the team established the Marine Citizen Science Sea Life Database, allowing divers to upload collected marine biological data. Through this model, the accumulation of long-term data serves as a crucial cornerstone for monitoring marine habitats and conducting biodiversity research.
